Love Is In The Air

Sharing is Caring!

                                                   Hello February

Welcome February, the month of love! Not only was my daughter Eva born in February but it’s literally a month full of love. I’ve always wondered how Valentine’s Day came to be. So here’s what I found it’s actually a tradition derived from Roman and Christianity.

Legend Says….

One legend says that there was priest that served in Rome during the 3rd century  named St. Valentine. It’s believed that he helped Christians escape imprisonment during their persecution in the Roman Empire. He was eventually caught and imprisoned himself, then martyred and buried on February 14th. So in return Christians feast on that day to celebrate him. By the end of the 5th century Pope Gelasius declared that St. Valentine’s Day be a Christian Holiday.

What’s Love Got To Do With It

So how did love enter the holiday? Well the oldest know Valentine was in 1415 from Charles, Duke of Orleans when he wrote to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London during the Battle of Agincourt, a battle during the Hundred Year’s War. He signed his note “from your Valentine”  It is a little ironic that war keeps coming up when we are supposed to be talking about love. I guess love really is war?

Now enters Shakespeare, the first and probably the most romantic playwright ever, In Hamlet, Ophelia sings:

Tomorrow is Saint Valentine’s day,
  All in the morning betime,
And I a maid at your window,
  To be your Valentine.
Then up he rose, and donned his clothes,
  And dupped the chamber door.
Let in the maid that out a maid
  Never departed more.

The Mother of Valentine’s

By the 1840’s Esther Howard also known as the Mother of Valentine’s began to sell the first mass-produced Valentine’s cards in America. She used real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures. Now the American Greeting Card Association estimates that about 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged. Making it the 2nd most popular card sending holiday after Christmas.
